La France qui Tombe

É o título de um livro de Nicolas Baverez e que os (filo-)americanos estão a adorar. No Chicago Boyz podem ler-se comentários como (Baverez não é mais doce):

"You are either with France, or you shut up. Of course, when Bush says so, it's stupid and "simplistic". But coming from the Elysee Palace, it is so very subtle and sophisticated."

"When you're a midget and looking important with the rest of the crowd matters most, standing up to the biggest guy is one obvious, if dangerous, choice. The susbstance of your opposition does not matter. Being seen to oppose is the main objective. "

"Pretense is indeed all we have left. And I would add that 99.9% of it hangs on that permanent seat at the U.N. Security Council. Without it, France would be largely ineffectual and irrelevant outside its immediate European backyard. As, in fairness, it should be."

Independentemente da relação com os Estados Unidos, é interessante ver isto na perspectiva da política interna europeia, em particular o alargamento e a constituição.
